Multi agency effort to introduce an all-encompassing Athletics Festival finally come to fruition after much uncertainty at the beginning
27 April 2016 – Over the next 2 weeks, members of Singapore Athletics will be tied down with a series of back to back major events in the National Stadium at the Singapore Sports Hub. These events include the 78th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships 2016 as well as the 19th Asia Masters Athletics Championships.
This year, Singapore Athletics will join forces with Sport Singapore (Sport SG), Ministry of Education (MOE) and Singapore Sports Hub (SSH) to have the finals of the 57th National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2016 Games incorporated into the final day of the Singapore Open programme during the festival. This integration will expand the outreach of the athletics fraternity and increase public awareness of the track and field calendar in Singapore.
To top it off, Active SG Fiesta has integrated free activities for all ages and abilities, such as a dance fitness parade and a 2km walk test.
To wrap up this season, the 19th Asia Masters Athletics Championships 2016 (AMAC). The opening ceremony for this event on 5 May 2016 will be officiated by Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development. This will be Singapore’s fourth time hosting the championships after having previously hosted it in 1981, 1985 and 1992.
Mr Tang Weng Fei, President of Singapore Athletics said, “We are very happy to finally see fruition of this Athletics Festival after months of planning and discussions. This seemed like a remote possibility even as recently as half a year ago and to pull this off with such little turnaround time speaks volume of our team at SA and the dedication of our staff to deliver the ultimate spectator and participants experience. I would also like to thank our partners MOE, Sport Singapore and Singapore Sports Hub in their relentless effort to make sure that the foundation is set right for many more editions of this Athletics Festival to come.”
The entire Athletics Festival will be expecting an estimated of 10,000 participant both locals and as well as overseas athletes across the southeast region in the spectacular National Stadium.
