Carmel Teo at the 38th Singapore Junior Athletics Championships successfully climbed up the women all-time list for pole vault of being the only two Singapore female athletes who has soared above 3.30 metres in the event.
The 16-year old won the girls pole vault open event which were contested by four athletes across three age groups, Under-15, Under-18 and Under-20 with a height of 3.31 metres yesterday at Bishan stadium.
What made the accomplishment much sweeter was that she fully did it albeit being down with sickness.
The Henderson Secondary School student athlete started her first height trial at 2.80 metres for which she cleared on her first attempt with room to spare.
She then moved on to 2.90 and 3.22 metres of which on she was able to clear at the second attempt for both trials.
After easily dismissing the 3.22 metres height which was a centimeters better than her season-best which was achieved in January, Carmel increased the bar height another nine centimeters to 3.31 metres.
The athlete from coach David Yeo pole vaulting stable once again cleared on her first attempt and made a significant breakthrough, setting a new Championship record, Youth best performance, national junior and two age-group records of Under19 and Under23 in female pole vault.
Record is pending ratification by SAA.
