SAA PRESS RELEASE
SINGAPORE, 29 April 2014 – In the matter of the suspension of Loh Chan Pew from the elected position of Vice-President Competition Organizing and In the matter of the suspension of Steven Lee from the co-opted position of Vice-President Training & Selection.
DECISION
The Appeals Panel was appointed by the Singapore Athletic Association (‘SAA’) on 7 March 2014 to hear and decide on the appeals of Mr. Loh Chan Pew and Mr. Steven Lee against the decision of SAA’s Management Committee to suspend them from their respective elected and co-opted positions in SAA with effect from 18 February 2014 to 30 June 2014.

The hearing was set on 24 April 2014, at the Boardroom of the Republic of Singapore Yacht Club at 0930 hours.
Having heard Mr. Loh Chan Pew and Mr. Steven Lee, representing themselves, and Mr. Tang Weng Fei, representing the SAA Management Committee, the Appeals Panel makes the following decisions: –
1. The SAA Management Committee’s action to suspend Mr Loh Chan Pew and Mr Steven Lee was not robust enough in accordance with due process for the purposes of the Management Committee’s powers to suspend persons under Rule 13 b) of the SAA Constitution.
2. As such, the Appeals Panel decide that Mr Loh Chan Pew’s and Mr Steven Lee’s respective appeals be allowed, and they be reinstated.
Quote from SAA President Mr. Tang Weng Fei:
“On behalf of the SAA MC, I accept the decision of the Appeals Panel which will be final and binding. I like to thank Mr. Low Teo Ping, Mrs. Jessie Phua and Mr. Cheah Kim Teck for assisting in this Appeal. The elected position of Mr. Loh Chan Pew as VP Competition and the co-opted position of Mr. Steven Lee as VP Training and Selection will be reinstated with immediate effect. As I’ve said before, there is and never was any personal issues between Mr. Loh, Mr. Steven Lee and myself. I look forward to their contribution to SAA.”

What is Sports Excellence (spex) Scholarship
The Sports Excellence Scholarship (spexScholarship) provides an enhanced level of support for athletes within the High Performance Sports (HPS) pathway.
spexScholarship includes both financial and programmatic support to prepare athletes to excel at the Major Games. In addition to developing athletes’ sporting potential, the spexScholarship will also assist athletes in their education, career, and personal development.
The spexScholarship supports talented athletes along the pathway at the 4 tiers of National, Regional, Continental and International:

- As for the start lists, there are some late entries added in.
- Athletes will be rewarded with 01 x T- shirt when they return of the survey and PAR – Q form to SAA. Forms will be passed when you collect your race bibs.
- Buffet dinner to all athletes on Sunday, 27 April starting at 4.30pm. Only athletes with race bibs are entitled for the buffet dinner, so please show your racing bibs at the counter. Buffet area is outside the call room.

Competition rules by organizer
SAA reserves the right to cancel and not participate in the meet.
- Individual Events – countries are allowed to enter participants as follows :
a. 100m-800m, 100m/110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles – 2 participants.
b. 1500m above – 4 participants.
c. Field Event – 3 participants.
Athletes are allowed only to participate in 3 individual events excluding the relays.
Relays – one team per country only.
Selection criteria for Singapore athletes for overseas meet
Note: Overseas meet request are for Open invitational meets and not encompass qualifying meets such as SEA Youth, Asian Junior, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games.
- Based on the quota given by organiser (on a meet by meet basis), SAA is willing to send any Singaporean Athlete who meets or betters the SEA Games 2013 bronze medal benchmark (3rd placing of 2013 Sea Games).
If the quota is not met based on the number of athletes selected and confirmed, any Singaporean Athlete who is 5% or less from the SEA Games 2013 bronze medal benchmark, will also be nominated. All these athletes will be ranked and the cut off will be the quota number invited. If the quota has been reached and if you are still keen to compete, SAA is willing to co-pay with you at 50% of the flight tickets and if you meet or better the bronze medal benchmark, SAA will reimburse you the fees paid.
For any other athletes who are 6-10% off the 3rd placing of the SEA Games 2013 and are keen to compete, SAA will, on a case by case basis endorse you to be part of the team but you will have to bear the full costs of the air ticket and room and board stipulated by the organiser. Upon achieving the qualifying mark or better, SAA will reimburse the full amount to you.
Only 2 Athletes per country are allowed to be entered per event. If more than 2 athletes meet the bronze medal benchmark, the top 2 ranked athletes according to the qualifying window period will be nominated as well.
All SAA sanctioned competition results will be considered for nomination.
All athletes who are nominated and selected will have to attend all Team Training, Briefing & Camps.
SAA reserves the right to drop any qualified Athlete if the Athlete is deemed unfit to perform at a competitive level.
Relays will be represented by selected national teams only.
