Assistant Coach

Reports to National Head Coach

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

1. Assist the Head Coach to implement a Sprints, Relays and Hurdles Program for athletes in both the National Elite Team and Developmental Team.

2. Assist the Head Coach to undertake a transformation of mindset and re-assessing the pathway structure all the way to elite high performance

3. Assist the Head Coach to plan, prepare and conduct coaching sessions for sprinters and hurdlers athletes.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES

1. Support in establishing performance targets and the criteria used to assess progress.

2. Assist with the design, coordination, implementation, evaluation and recording of the effectiveness of athlete development in conjunction with associated coaches.

3. Support all relevant athlete developments as agreed by Head Coach.

4. Evaluates the athletes’ performance and progress to ensure peak performance during practices and competitions

5. Assist in creating a coaching environment that promotes good values and mind-set in a high performance environment.

6. Assist to reinforce value and responsibilities that ensures discipline and appropriate behaviour in terms of performance on and off competition.

7. Assist in ensuring the safety and welfare of all athletes and managing athletes during national team centralized training, given the proper Feedbacks to achieve the program goals.

8. Work as a team player and promote coherent group dynamics.

9. Acts as a member of the selection panel and contribute fully to the selection process.

10. Assist in providing competition and season reports for GM.

 

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

1. Willing to work irregular hours on occasions, including weekend work.

2. Demonstrates an understanding of athletics and the function of a sport’s governing body.

3. Have track and field experience coaching Sprints, Relays and Hurdles groups

4. An understanding of the coaching principles

5. Act as a good role model

6. Ability to exercise initiative and be proactive

7. Shows consistency between words and effort and inspires confidence.

8. Approachable and encourages creativity and contributions from others.

9. Wins concessions without damaging relationships.

10. Flexible in approach to changing conditions.

11. Able to remain calm under pressure.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE

1. Experience as an athlete advantageous

2. Experience and knowledge of the needs of sprinters and hurdles athletes in a high performance environment and the various sports science and medicine disciplines

3. Biomechanical and anatomical knowledge and the ability to it to sprinters and hurdles training programs.

4. Experience and knowledge of and the ability to construct a sport specific needs analysis, programme design, macro training plans and the ability to implement and conduct monitoring and assessments to support programming and needs analysis.

5. Knowledge of and ability to coach specific performance enhancing strength and power training methods, including Olympic lifts, and specific conditioning exercises to promote robustness to injury and support effective training process.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

1. A sports related qualification at degree level.

2. A sports related qualification at postgraduate level.

3. Coaching qualification (or willingness to work towards).
