Singapore Athletics Association (SAA) presented the 1st SA U13 Championship 2017 which was held on July 1st, 2017, from 8am to 7pm, at Toa Payoh Stadium.
The overall response for this inaugural event has been extremely encouraging, with a total of 770 young athletes signed up, of which 50 athletes will travel from Johor, Malaysia to compete.
These potential future junior track stars competed in events appropriately customized to their ages ranging from 5 to 12 years old. For the 10-, 11- and 12-year old, a special divisional challenge trophy was awarded to the teams with the highest cumulative points scored. The top eight placed boys and girls contributed points to their teams’ total score according to their respective age divisions. The teams with the highest cumulative points in each division won the age division challenge trophies.
The divisional champions were:
10 year old – Nanyang Primary School
11 year old – Nanyang Primary School
12 year old – SJK Tamil Masai (Johor)
The organizer hopes that events for young children like this will interest them in sports and spur them to take training seriously and in a disciplined manner from a young age. Regular sporting activity will also help curb the rise of childhood obesity and contribute to these children’s lifelong health. Furthermore, it is hoped that through sport training and competition, these kids will cultivate good sportsmanship values right from the beginning.
Since Feb 1st, 2017, the SAA has implemented the “Kids’ Development” (KD) Programme as part of its Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Programme. The parents of these children have expressed their enthusiasm for the way the programme has been conducted and culminating in this U-13 event. As part of the SAA’s LTAD plan, the KD Development programme aims to promote participation among children in fun and healthy fundamental movement programmes, offer the necessary coaching facilities for skills development, and healthy competitive opportunities aimed at promoting personal progress. The programme also allows for early talent spotting.
The LTAD Programme’s main service is to provide developmental coaching service for the general public at an affordable rate. This access to a high quality athletics development programme is aligned with the principles of the IAAF’s own LTAD programme, taking its philosophy from the IAAF CES Level 1 Manual.
With the success of the KD Programme thus far and the success of the completed 1st SA U13 Championship, we hope more parents will sign up for the KD Programme in the future.
