18-year-old Wong Kai Yuen has not only shot put himself into the record books, but also earned the Republic its first medal, a bronze at the 2012 Asian Junior Athletics Championship yesterday.

The Hwa Chong Institution student-athlete managed an effort of 17.39 metres, to finish third in a field of eight competitors in the Boys Shot Put event for 6 kilograms.

Wong Kai Yuen surpassed other athletes from Iran, Iraq, Thailand and Indonesia, but however had to settle behind Abdul Qadri Mohammad Omer of Saudi Arabia who was second with 18.44 metres, and the Asian Junior Record holder Li Meng of China, who was the favorite to win, getting gold unchallenged with a 19.95 metres effort.

His previous season-best was 16.31 metres back in March which was then a new National Junior record, and his 17.39 metres effort is the latest record for the event.

The Asian Junior will be into its second day today, and is held between 9-12th June in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Note: Record is pending ratification by SAA
