Coach Qi Zutan was employed by the association back in the 90’s to spearhead our national training program.

The China coach was here in Singapore for a coaching stint between 1990 to 1993.

Under his watchful eyes, Coach Qi Zutan would put through punishing routines to our national athletes at the old National Stadium in Kallang.

He was partly responsible for our best athletics showing at the 17th Southeast Asian Games held in Singapore from 12 June to 20 June 1993.

The athletes who have trained under him and advised by him includes:

  • Yu Long Nyu (Heptathlon)
  • Chan See Hui
  • Wong Yew Tong (coaching together with Lim Boot Hiang)
  • Ho Aik Teng (High jump)
  • Huang Hwa Ren (Javelin throw)
  • Chua Boon Yao (Discus throw)
  • Lim Chow Hoon (Shot Put)
  • some young students as well

Now 81-years-old, he now stays in Beijing Dong Cheng District with his wife, youngest son, son in law and grandson.

Recently SAA Chief, Sport Development & Performance Mr. James Wong was in China for a course attending the IAAF CEO/General secretary course.

Through James, coach Qi convey his seasons greetings and well-wishes to all his friends in Singapore.

Former athletes and coaches who wishes to make contact with coach Qi, please email email@singaporeathletics.org.sg.

Check out our SEA Games FaceBook and dedicated page.

In 2009, Team Singapore achieved two gold (James Wong’s Discus, Zhang Guirong’s Shotput), one silver (4x100m men), two national records (4x100m men, Long Jump men), four personal best (4x100m men, Amirudin’s 100m, Matthew Goh’s long jump, Scott Wong’s Discus) at the biennial Games with a squad of 15-member athletes team.

Well in 2011 Games edition, how did the 27-member athlete delegation fare this time round?

The report card so far is that the team has performed ‘satisfactorily’ as assessed by chef de mission Dr Tan Eng Liang giving athletics a rating of ‘B’ [link].

While the Straits Times gave the team an ‘A’ rating for their performance in Palembang [link].

One thing is for sure be it an A or B ratings, they’ve done us immensely proud surpassing the SEA Games medal expectation of six medals set by the association, and brought back home with a seven-medal haul instead.

This time round we achieved two gold, three silver, two bronze, one national junior boys record, four personal best, and six season best by our athletes.

The 44-member SEA Games athletics squad, athletes, officials and coaches combined sent for the 26th edition of the event in the year of 2011, is the largest since the 1993 edition.

The future looks bright as the competing squad comprises of 11 female and 17 male athletes, of which eight are below the age of 20-years-old.

Here’s a breakdown of medal tally and media files during the five competition days which saw 46 events, and 138 medals being contested.

The new version provides a user-friendly and efficient interface for athletes to submit and update their whereabouts information.

WADA has produced a YouTube video tutorial to guide athletes through step-by-step in the new ADAMS whereabouts interface. Please watch the video tutorial below.

Anti-Doping Singapore would like to take this opportunity once again to remind all Anti-Doping Singapore Registered Testing Pool and Domestic Testing Pool athletes to keep your whereabouts information updated and accurate at all times to avoid any whereabouts failures.

Please contact Mr Wong Soon Meng at Tel: 65005430 or Email: soonmeng@antidoping.org.sg if you need any further clarification on the use of the new ADAMS whereabouts interface for athletes.

Qualification

Please download the Selection guideline for 2012 Asian Junior Athletics Championship.

1. Qualification Standards

In order to be entered in the Asian Junior 2012 competition, an athlete will be required to achieve the appropriate Qualification Standard in the event(s) in which he/she is entered.

The Qualification Standards and relevant criteria shall be established by the SAA from 1st November 2011 onwards and will be valid till the final entry submission dead line for all events.

2. Qualification Period

Athletes must reach the standards as set by the SAA during the following prescribed periods:

  • All individual events: 1 November 2011 to 31 May 2012 (or pending deadline for submission of final entry name list)
  • Relays: 1 Feb 2012 to 31 May 2012. Runners will be selected from the National Junior Squad
  • The closing date for preliminary entries is fixed on March 31, 2012.
  • The deadline for entry is 24th May, 2012.

3. Qualifying Requirements

There are 3 phases during the qualifying period. Any athlete keen to be selected for the said event needs to compete in at least 1 competition from each phase to be considered eligible.

Time/Distance/Height recorded from the events and the athlete’s positioning will be ranked and monitored for consistency in performance throughout the season to be considered for final nomination.

If more than 2 athletes per event qualify or if there is a tie, then the final phase competition results will be used for the final nomination.

The final number of athletes that will be entered will be based base on the maximum of athletes that can be entered per event in the competition.

4. Qualifying Events

All performances must be achieved during competitions organised or authorised by the SAA or any SAA sanction competitions in conformity with IAAF Rules in the stipulated time frame.

Results achieved at university or school competitions will only be accepted if the Meets are sanctioned and certified by the SAA in which the competition was organised.

Performances achieved in mixed events between male and female participants, held completely in the stadium, may be accepted under specific circumstances and conditions (see IAAF Rule 147).

Wind assisted performances will not be accepted. Hand timing performances in 100m, 200m, 400m, 110m/100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles and 4x100m Relay will not be accepted. Indoor performances for all field events and for races of 200m and longer, will be accepted.

For the running events of 400m and over (including combined events), performances achieved on oversized tracks shall not be accepted.
