The top three finisher for ‘A’ boys 400m hurdles finals. From the left Ang Chen Xiang of RI (3rd, 57.90), Timothee Yap Jin Wei of HCI (1st, 54.80) and Samuel Tay Chin Keat of HCI (3rd, 57.69)

Timothee Yap Jin Wei won his 400m hurdles ‘A’ boys finals at the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 in record breaking time of 54.80 seconds earlier this morning.

The schoolboy clipped his own Championship mark of 55.15 seconds set in the heats last week by some thirty-five hundredth of a second.

The sublime timing by the Hwa Chong Institution athlete is the fastest time in recent memory set by a Singaporean who has run below 55 seconds for the 400m hurdles event.

With his scintillating form shown in the National School, this promising junior is currently Singapore’s best over the distance. In fact the 17-year-old is not far in meeting the SEA Games 2011 qualifying mark which stands at 54.15 seconds.

Chan Sheng Yao of Hwa Chong Institution coming into the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 has a personal best of 4.00 meters in the ‘B’ boys pole vault event.

The 15-year-old remarkably improved his lifetime best by some 38 centimeters on day four (18th April, Monday) of the Championships.

He soared to a new PB height of 4.38 meters, which deservedly earned him the gold medal. His nearest competitor, Nick Ho Ellis of ACS(I) could only muster a 4.00 meter effort for the silver.

Not only the youngster achieved a personal best, but he also established a new record for the ‘B’ boys pole vault event.

The mark was 2 centimeters better than 4.36 meters height registered by his senior, Sean Lim Zi Qing back in 2009.

Chan Sheng Yao has enable a clean sweep of records by pole vaulters from coach David Yeo’s stable. The former SAA Chief of high performance now has pole vaulters who hold records from men’s national, boys junior, women’s national, and now national schools.

Anglo-Chinese Junior College’s Chan Zhi Xuan on the seventh day (22nd April, Friday) of the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 took a crack at one of the oldest record still standing, the ‘A’ girls discus, and succeeded.

Her new mark of 38.60 meters improved the old record by some 3.12 meters.

It previously stood at 35.48 meters established by Asha Mane of YIS back in 1972.

Chan Zhi Xuan has finally managed to shatter Asha’s long-standing record which has prevailed for the past 39 years.

The 17-year-old who is currently in JC1 has progressed through the division in record style.

Last year, competing under Cedar Girls’ colors, Chan Zhi Xuan hurled a distance of 37.94 meters to capture the ‘B’ Girls discus title, and in the process also breaking Wan Lay Chi’s National Schools record of 37.25 meters.

This very much means an exciting prospect for the local athletics scene as now we’ve an up and coming junior that’s coming through the ranks.

Coming off a recent sublime record-breaking run of 1:54.14 in the 800m at the recent SAA Track & Field Series #3, Zachary Ryan Devaraj was the firm favorite for the ‘A’ boys 800m division title at the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011.

Well he didn’t disappoint as the 17-year-old led from start to finish. He lapped the first round with a split of around 57 seconds with such consummate ease.

The final lap with no push, and any competitor near him, Zachary celebrated early by finger wagging to the stands at the 300 meter mark, much to the delight of the crowds.

He reached the finish line in a new Championship record time of 1:57.10, eclipsing the old mark of 1:57.67 set by Subaish s/o Rajamanickam of Yishun Junior College dated 2002.

Ang Chen Xiang number #128 being congratulated on his win.

17-year-old Ang Chen Xiang matched Abdul Hakeem Bin Abdul Halim‘s 2005 ‘A’ boys 110m hurdle mark of 14.46 seconds earlier today at the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011.

The IAAF World Youth Championship bound athlete cleared the 0.991 meters hurdles with such ease, that it’s not surprising that he is one of two junior athlete who has not only met the qualifying mark for the earlier said competition, but also the upcoming Commonwealth Youth Games, and also the SEA Juniors.

Coached by Mr. Melvin Tan, the current national relays coach coordinator, the promising hurdler improved his timing of 14.67 seconds set in the heats early in the morning, by clocking 14.46 seconds in the finals.

Prior to this, Ang Chen Xiang has run faster, 14.24 seconds at the SAA T&F series #2. He currently holds top three fastest times ran by a Singapore junior so far this year, for the 0.991 meters hurdles.

Wong Kai Yuen in the centre of the picture above in red tee.

Just two weeks ago Wong Kai Yuen broke his own national junior record mark (6kg) in the shot put event, and now he has added another record breaking feat under his belt at the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 held earlier today.

The 17-year-old erased Lim Zhuo Yan’s 2009 ‘B’ boys shot put record of 17.11 meters, with a new distance of 17.68 meters.

With the new registered mark, the Hwa Chong Institution athlete also in the process re-wrote his own under-17 shot put record of 17.16 meters (5kg); pending ratification by SAA, set earlier this year at SAA Track & Field Series #1.

The junior shot putter now has two golds coming off the Championships. The day before he captured the ‘A’ boys division title in the discus event.

It was double joy for CHIJ Katong Convent’s Jannah Wong Min as she sets two consecutive records enroute to win the ‘B’ Girls 100m hurdle earlier today at the 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011.

The 15-year-old was clocked at 14.92 seconds during the morning heats, and later on during the afternoon session she went on to hurdle even faster, breaking her own half-day old record with a new time of 14.85 seconds.

Jannah, who is currently coached by Mr Lim Tian Quee, was in a class of her own with her 3-step hurdling technique, where the young promising hurdler has been winning divisional title since 2008.

She moved up a division this year to ‘B’ girls, after capturing the ‘C’ girls 80m hurdles title last year, no less in record winning time also.

Previously the ‘B’ girls 100m hurdles record was held by Singapore Sports School’s Goh Wei Ning. The old mark stood at 15.00 seconds set last year.

400m ‘A’ Boys national school podium winners, from left, RI Seow Yeong Yang (2nd, 49.54s), RI Ng Chin Hui (1st, 48.98s), ACJC R. Avinash (3rd, 50.71s)

The 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 earlier today saw Raffles Institution’s Ng Chin Hui running below 49 seconds in the finals, to win bragging rights for the ‘A’ division 400m boys title.

Not since Hong Fulong Sandy hand-timed 48.80 seconds winning time in the National Schools back in 1984, has a schoolboy ever ran a sub-49 seconds race.

Chin Hui, currently a year one student obliterated the old electronic-timed record of 49.35 seconds held jointly by Shalindran Sathiyanesan of Millennia Institute set in 2008, and his fellow teammate Seow Yeong Yang, who equaled the old mark last Monday.

Coming into the race as the third fastest qualifier, the 17-year-old was allotted lane number three. His teammate Seow Yeong Yang, the fastest qualifier via the semifinal, started from lane four, while last year ‘A’ division 400m boys defending champion, ACJC’s R. Avinash was in lane five.

That prove to be a tactical advantage for Chin Hui, who is currently coached by Mr. Loh Chan Pew, as he came from behind, and made his move at the 300 meters mark. Seow Yeong Yang by then had no answer to his devastating kick, while R. Avinash recent dip in form was showing.

Ng Chin Hui goes on to win the race in a new Championship record time of 48.98 seconds, Seow Yeong Yang finished second in 49.54 seconds, and R. Avinash settled for bronze in a time of 50.71 seconds.

Raffles Institution relay team now boasting two runners capable of running a definite sub-50 seconds 400m timing, will the upcoming 4x400m race be a foregone conclusion? Well find out tomorrow, Thursday, as the heats for the event starts.
